The Fault In My Stars

Author's Comment:
Phew, at this rate I'd be churning out 1 post per year. The law of quality over quantity does state that a more focused, specialized and detailed product tends to shine above mediocre mass production. Highly doubt that's the case here though.
But I digress.

*Clears throat* so, I'm going to be a tad selfish this time around and talk about me; myself. Although, considering the erratic pattern which is my personality, I suspect that somewhere in the middle of this post the scope of the topic will expand by itself.

Our society is a funny thing. I've always said that. We love to judge, we love to categorize, and we love to isolate things into their respective categories. Curious, "isolate", considering we are a social species. I am revisited by a quote from a movie, "Transcendence", uttered by Dr. Will Caster, played by Johnny Depp. "They are only afraid because they don't understand". That sums up the bulk of our species quite well; we are a bunch of space monkeys that are insecure about things we "cannot" comprehend. Yet we do naught to remedy this flaw. When the automobiles first appeared, there were mass hysteria over possible problem automobiles might represent, but 100 odd years later and we shudder at the thought of not owning a car now.
We are afraid of things we don't understand, yet we don't even try to understand them.

It's not only automobiles mind you. This applies to humans too, and this is where the "me" part comes in.
I was raised in a rather.. unorthodox household. unorthodox within the boundary of my own culture and nation. I'm a single child, and I was brought up in an English household, with a dash of Chinese dialect known as "Hokkien". The bulk of my childhood, and my life really similar to many others, is centered around that: the household. I was raised with English as the only medium for me to interact with the world around me, so naturally I'd work with the tool I'm most comfortable with.
And there's where the problem begins. See, in my country, we have a term for people like me. "Bananas". The logic is that we are yellow outside, and white inside.

But what exactly is a "banana"? Yes, I know it's a tropical fruit rich in potassium, but I'm referring to the criterion for somebody to be labelled a "banana".
Well, to the "pure" Chinese clique, a banana is defined as a person who has apparently zero capabilities of speaking their mother tongue (Mandarin), and has adopted a western way of living and thinking.
The actual consensus is very fuzzy, but one thing is for certain, the "prestigious" title of being called a banana is only bestowed upon those who "fails" at being a Chinese. This is where I crack my knuckles and abuse my keyboard.

First off, what constitutes as being Chinese? The language we speak? How we eat our food? Bidet over tissue? As far as I know, the only sure way of determining the lineage of a person is via their genetics. You wouldn't identify a Mandarin speaking Welsh as a Chinese now would you? You'll just call him by who he is, a caucasian, or at the most "That-white-guy-who-speaks-suprisingly-good-Mandarin". Or better yet, his name.
Yet Malaysian Chinese don't understand this fundamental concept. My "kind" has been oppressed (heavy wording, but accurate), by those who consider themselves "pure Chinese" for as long as I can remember.
During conversations, we (bananas), get left out. Cultural Barrier activated.
When we violate a "taboo" unknowingly, we get criticized for being ignorant.
It's not that we do not try, we do. I know I did, oh and how I tried. How I tried to fit in. How I tried to be more "Chinese", to be like "my people".
I try to speak, I get criticized and made fun off, and perhaps worst off is I get ignored.
I try to learn their humor and culture, I get walled off and pushed back, simply because "I wouldn't understand" or "it wouldn't translate".
I try to ask my own family, yes, my own flesh and blood. I get told off "Hah, who ask you never want to try to speak or adapt? who ask you never try to learn your own heritage?"
I do not mind being laughed at for trying, but I was broken when nobody around me was willing to pay attention to me because I just wasn't worth a damn to spend their effort on. I'm just another banana after all right? People like me are better off being "that guy" in a group of friends, the comic relief. Cause that's what we are, an overglorified zoo exhibition.

I'm sure there are those out there who feels this way, regardless of their ethnicity. Isolated because they are the black sheep of a community. Never given a chance to try, shot down and wings grounded.
I am honestly disgusted with my people at times, I really am. I've had my foreign friends come to me countless times to complain "hey man, why is it that Chinese are so reserved and cold towards us? It's so hard for us to establish a dialogue because they are always with their own".
I usually just respond by saying "you just answered your own question, we are akin to tribes from yesteryear. We prefer to wander among ourselves where the world makes sense to our eyes. However, those of us that are different, we are shunned out of the pool to the perilous world out there. Little did those outcasts know, the world is so much more vast and breathtaking. I am one of those outcasts, and I'm still exploring".

I never forget who I am, I never forget my culture nor my heritage, and I do respect them contrary to popular belief (when I say "popular"...). But I'm not proud of it, in the sense that I put no superiority on my heritage, nor on any other individual's heritage. Many Chinese do however, and for that I hate many of my own kind. I won't lie, many Chinese find that their crap smells sweeter than others, akin to the "Purity & Supremacy" doctrine of Hitler (perhaps not that extreme, but you get my point).
If being balls deep into an ethnicity's socio-cultural aspect qualifies them as a native, I'm 20% Japanese, 50% American, 30% Martian. But I'm obviously no Americano Martian-San. I'm 100% human, and I have the culture of the world in me. I am an Earthling and always will be.
If my incompetence disqualifies me from being a Chinese, then so be it.
Segregation is so 1800s anyways.

Judge and Jury

Societal issues; being a judgmental prick. What does it truly mean to be judgmental? Have you actually thought about that? Is it judgmental to make an instantaneous judgement upon someone who looks skinny, pale, and haggard and simply label them as a drug addict? What about that man over that street corner that wears a long trench coat, sitting on a bench minding his own business?

The former is a cancer patient and the latter a pervert wanking his joystick.

See, what I'm trying to point out is that, we as a society, we're the single most judgmental and pretentious species on planet Earth. But that's good. Why you ask? simple, we need to be judgmental for our society to function, and being pretentious is just the by-product to encourage us to be judgmental. By comparing others with ourselves, we create illusions that we are "better" than them in certain, or if you're really a narcissist then perhaps all, aspects. It's the bread and butter of our existence, the very foundation of our "trust system".

Being judgmental is good, very good for ourselves as a species. BUT. But the main problem here is HOW judgmental we are as a society. What am I on about you ask? well, take this for example, pretty people. It is hard-wired in our biology and society that all the pretty people gets the good stuff, and pretty=perfect/good. So, taking that as a basis for judgement, every time we walk about the street we draw a quick sketch on a person's profile.
"Breast? a wee bit too small. Height? not bad. Looks? meh, alright I guess, not as fine as the one to her right, hot damn. Fashion? she dresses alright, bet she's from a normal family though".

That was the train of thought for a typical male(sorry ladies, I'm aware that the comparison might seem sexist, but I'm too lazy to make two comparisons for both genders), and it happens almost instantaneously, frequently. That's the scary thing, we judge people on a daily basis and almost every second, but we only care about superficial stuff such as who's hot or not, to the point where it is embedded in our subconscious.

Judging, or assessing, was used as a form of survival tool back in the olden days, to determine if a person is worthy of trust or not. It was important, or else a tribe might let a serial killer in their midst.

But today, it's a joke. Anime? ew, what the heck? they are adults watching cartoons. Board games? get a life nerd. Can't afford a new phone? pfft, loser.
Get what I mean? As a geek, I've been on the receiving end of the stick for too long I can't even remember.

It's scary, because our society is "progressing" and we because are at peace, the judging process grew to allow the inclusion such superficial thoughts. Sure, you might argue that it ensures that the "alpha" dog of the pack is chosen, but I argue that it breeds ignorant bullies and superficial people. Unless your idea of "alpha" is a bunch of jocks or brainless douchebags that contributes nothing of significant importance to the human race, then you need help.

So what if somebody has a different taste? So what if you can't seem to understand others for who they are? That does not give you the right to judge and worst, act upon your judgement. Keep it to yourselves, and keep the process simple; judge those who happen to be a threat to their immediate surrounding or to humanity in general.

Like I said, survival tool baby, use the hammer wisely.

RELI?gion

Okay, breaks to the floor, before I begin, don't worry, this isn't like my usual posts; to those of you who actually follow my posts. This is a bit more of a logic and reasoning kind of post (I mean, come on, can't be all passionate posts now can it?)

Now,

Quite recently I had a talk with one of my acquaintance regarding morality. Now, to the general public, morality is often entangled with religion; just like peanut butter, or bacon and my tummy. It's melded together. But we have a different opinion (not really our opinion, more like Richard Dawkin's).

So let's talk about morality, what constitutes morality? Love? Honor? Pride? Loyalty to our one true God? Well, the holy water sprinklers of the Christian faith believe that morality is derived heavily from religion. In their mind, without religion, we will be lawless animals and anarchy will loom over the face of the Earth. Well, who could possibly object that? I mean, if people started looting and raping and killing babies, it's pretty darn obvious the world will be quite literally fucked. Which religion would say anything against that? Nope, they won't.

But is that what will really happen if religion is thrown out of the window? The answer is, most probably not. Why you ask?
Well, first, to cynically assume that the entire human race will be plunged into immoral actions the minute the order of religion collapses just goes to show that religious leaders don't even have faith in their own species, so to begin with, we are already equally screwed if our leaders already dismiss us as fashionable baboons.

Second, as Richard Dawkins wrote in his book, The God Delusion (and I am vaguely para-phrasing here), morality is just a by product of human evolution. It helps us pro-create and also maintain our dominance. Feelings such as guilt and love for our fellow beings for example, enables us to learn from mistakes and feel empathy towards our own kind. Thus, it doesn't take religion to regulate morality. (on another note, religion is a by product of our evolutionary process, but let's leave that for next time).

Third, as I've mentioned, if an individual is so cheap as to go haywire the minute his belief system is thrown out the window, then to begin with he is just living a lie. True, some people are like that, but if that is the case, we are just acting good to please God. Now, if God really does exist, do you really think he/she/it is such a sucker to fall for that? So, the idea of religion and morality being melded together to create order out of chaos just collapses upon itself. If religious organizations requires the world to follow a religion in order to uphold moral values; since cynically, we are all just barbarians that love to sin, and if said moral values are being judged by an almighty god, the conclusion would be we are just living a big fat lie.

Now, I realised my logic may be flawed at some point, but the point I am trying to get across is that morality does not necessarily derives from religion. True, religion maybe an outlet to regulate our deep emotional turmoil, but that just means we are not strong enough to face our true self and that we are faking our lives. Besides, if we truly stick to the Holy Book, the book itself already collapses upon itself because of all the 18++ content in there namely *cough* rape, looting *cough* baby killing *cough*.

Definitely NSFW folks.

Deck the halls!

BOOM! I am back baby!

Ahhhh, been awhile since I blogged. Felt voided of every reason to blog due to my previous blog's poorly choosen design scheme. Oh welp, that is what happens when you become a lazy bum who is too lazy to even write a simple CSS and HTML script.

Now, moving along, it has been my third semester in university and I've pretty much adapted to the life; just another way to say I am practically used to the lifeless lifestyle of an IT student har har har. But I digress...

Moving on!

I have been exposed to sooooo much awesome stuff this year. Lets not mention CF cause I will just burst in my RAWR RAWR mode due to overjoy. Now, stuff like Star Trek: Voyager just makes me go all (≧∇≦)/. I SWEAR, 2012 IS A GOOD YEAR FOR SCIENCE.

I mean, the elusive Higgs Boson has been found (RAWRRRRRRR) and the Mars Rover made in to Mars (RAWRRRRRRRR). Oh science (T▽T).

Now, BOOKS I'VE READ (or reading):
Cosmos - Carl Sagan (RAWRRRRRR)
The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
The Pale Blue Dot - Carl Sagan (RAWRRRRRR)
Physics Of The Future - Michio Kaku
Physics Of the Impossible - Michio Kaku
Billions and Billions - Carl Sagan (RAWRRRRR)

Oh lord, I love me some good book.

As for CF, just one thing need to be said; IMMA GONNA TRY TO COS AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

Money Makes The World Go Round

Yes, believe it or not people, money is the essence of life. It is what enables us to buy our daily needs, enables us to afford luxurious item, and where necessary, enables us to engage on services. Without money, we are better off living the life of a baboon. Now, by money I do not mean hard cold cash; money can be interpreted as a form of currency such as bartering. Regardless, the concept of currency is materialism. Materialism. That word sounds immoral or even makes one look like a cheap individual. But no, materialism is good. Considerate materialism.

Think about it, one way or another, we have to sacrifice something in order to obtain something of equivalent value. Money for a television, work for money, energy for work, etc etc. It's a cycle of life, and quoted from FMA, it's the principle of "equivalent exchange".

So, to conclude, our live revolves around the presumption of this law of  "equivalent exchange" right? Wrong. Fact is, we do not know the true value of anything. Hell, we don't even know the true value of ourselves, yet we dare place a price tag on an object? So, how are taxes calculated? How are resources divided and sold? Well, let's just say a wise guy from the past made up an entire system for this and hence we just treat it like an additional limb after thousand of years of ignorance.

However, my beef is not with the "true value" of an item, no. It is the misuse of said item that pisses me off. Here in Malaysia, we are a religious bunch, and I am fine by that if it weren't for all the damned misuse of fortune. Lets face it, our government is a run by a bunch of monkeys claiming that know what's best for the citizen of this country. And what is worst than a country being run by monkeys? a country run by religious monkeys. Granted that most of them are muslim, and this is an islamic country by paper, some of their "decisions" are plain absurd. Case in point, mosque. Now don't get me wrong, what you wanna do within the confines of your sacred rendezvous point is up to you, but seriously, do you REALLY need to blow BILLIONS of dollars to erect said confines? How paranoid are you? What? if the walls are made out of diamonds it'd be a better antennae to relay your wishes to your God? How absurd. That money is better spent feeding the poor of this country. It's fine to have a grand community hall where you can compare clothes, brag about your kids and pretend to uphold a sense of righteousness, but please, one is enough. We don't need two white elephants sitting still waiting for Hari Raya to come, we have better use for the tax money we pay you know.

They say poverty is not an issue that can be resolved overnight. I say it is. If politicians learn to stop being corrupt and actually making right, smart decisions every once in awhile, we wouldn't have people living in the streets. I have always been against spending shitload of money for building excessive religious centres; not only for the muslims, but even for the taoist, buddhist, christian, and so on. There is just no practical need for them, why not give that money to people who really need it?
Why not allocate them to science and human progress?
Why confine our mind to those of the early 14th century and live in a lie?
Why be deluded?
What is the practical use?
Think about it the next time you "donate" to a church/mosque/temple/wat/etc

SPOILERS

GODDAMN SPOILERS.

There, I said it.

Seriously people, I know you are all hyped up over a certain video/song/issue, but damn, keep it down will you? You might think it's fun and fine to give out spoilers like it's nobody's business, but think about it, what if it were YOU in the receiving end of the spoilers? How would you feel? Exactly, that is how I am feeling right now.

I've been a fan of the How I Met Your Mother series for quite some time now; but I took a short break to let the series catch up and instead I focused my attention elsewhere. I EXPECTED discretion and isolation from the series. But nope. It hit me square in the face.

9Gag. The source of all thing unholy.

A post. Seem innocent enough, but noooooooooo. The minute I read that cursed post my eyes bled. They spoiled the season finale for me. THE SEASON.FINALE. That is cruel. Downright cruel. Seriously? You can't find a better idea for a post and had to plagiarize on a series??? Goddamn this people are annoying.

Well, rage aside, life is pretty good. Tiring, but good. I mean, it's university after all, so meh, I'll live. Till next time folks.

Haters gonna hate

Now, as the title suggest, I've been dealing with quite a number of bullshit about my blog. Namely by creationists which, not surprising, consists of Christians. I won't stoop so low as to mention their name, cause' it'd just be a waste of space and time.

To begin with, I honestly do not know what the problem is. I mean, have I truly wrote posts that act as a demeaning or condescending statement towards people's belief? All I've done is just express my thoughts on what I believe things appear to be. Is it not true that the Christian faith is very vague and very conflicting in terms of their 'conduct'? The pope for instance, with all his 'grace', 'good will' and 'charity', demands millions of dollars for an appearance in Mexico. What happened to spreading the faith for the sake of spreading the faith? You wanna preach? Go ahead, preach all you want, as if I give two fucks what you're preaching, just keep out of my wallet. I guess now all the pope needs is a group of groupies; oh wait! he do! they are called nuns. Now, it might be just a rumor started off by a troller, but hey, you ever thought what mister popey could do if he sold that big ass gold staff of his? man, he could feed an entire town or perhaps even an entire district in Africa for months! But no, he needs that staff to 'bless' people. Did I also mention that Christians believe that the earth is not more than 6000 years old?? Apparently, a talking snake and a woman made out of the rib of a man is more believable than millions of years of evolution.

Now do you understand why I think that, nay, I see that religion, Christianity in particular is very questionable and vague? It just begs to be questioned and made fun of, it really does. Now, do not pleasure yourself by thinking I wrote this blog specifically for you, I am just taking the opportunity to show YOU the real TRUTH; and to make fun of your little story book, as usual.

cheerio, and 'god bless'.
